The first commercial flight at Noida International Airport touched down at 7:55 am on Monday, 15 June, as an aircraft arriving from Lucknow completed the inaugural landing, signalling the formal commencement of passenger operations at the newly built facility in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. The milestone comes nearly three months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the airport on 28 March.

Scenes at the Airport

As the aircraft touched the runway, passengers inside broke into applause. Ground crews greeted the plane with a traditional water cannon salute, a customary honour marking the symbolic start of operations. Outside the terminal, crowds of excited families, farmers, and women farmers — several of whom were boarding a commercial aircraft for the first time in their lives — had gathered ahead of the arrival, their faces reflecting anticipation and joy.

What the Inaugural Flight Carried

The symbolic first flight was not a routine commercial service. It carried farmers from the Jewar region who had contributed their land for the airport project — a gesture widely described by officials as a tribute to those whose sacrifice made the development possible. The farmers were travelling to Lucknow to meet Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and express their gratitude. Regular commercial operations connecting the region with major Indian cities are expected to follow this inaugural phase.

What Officials Said

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Dhirendra Singh, speaking at the occasion, called the moment historic and emotionally significant for the area. 'This is a moment beyond words. Now, everyone is waiting for the aircraft to take off with the farmers on board. Farmers will see their land from the windows of the plane and remember how they did farming and earned for their children. Earlier, farming was the only source of livelihood, but today people in the region have multiple opportunities. They can improve their standard of living, provide better education to their children, and explore new avenues of employment and business,' he said.

Yamuna Authority CEO Rakesh Kumar Singh framed the launch within the broader vision articulated by the Prime Minister. 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi had envisioned a future where even an ordinary citizen wearing slippers could travel by air. Today, through Noida International Airport and under the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, that vision is becoming a reality,' he said. Singh added that the first flight carrying farmers to Lucknow was 'a matter of great pride and happiness for all of us.'

Significance for Western Uttar Pradesh

Officials described the airport as a transformative infrastructure project for western Uttar Pradesh and surrounding districts. Beyond air connectivity, authorities highlighted its potential to generate employment, improve mobility for rural communities, and attract investment to a region that has historically relied on agriculture. This comes amid a broader push by the Uttar Pradesh government to position the Yamuna Expressway corridor as an industrial and logistics hub.

What Comes Next

With the inaugural ceremony complete, Noida International Airport is expected to transition gradually toward full-fledged scheduled passenger services. Authorities have indicated plans to link the airport with major cities across India, though a detailed route schedule has not yet been announced publicly.
