Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Noida, April 9 (NationPress) - In a significant operation against cybercrime, police in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddha Nagar have successfully dismantled a fraudulent call center located in Sector-16, Noida, apprehending 16 suspects, according to officials. This gang misled foreign nationals through paid online ads, instilling fear regarding hacking and data breaches.
The police's action stemmed from local intelligence and technical evidence. Recovered items from the suspects include 4 laptops, 15 desktops, 15 monitors, 16 mobile phones, 16 microphone-headsets, 2 routers, and a modem.
Authorities revealed that this group had been engaged in organized cyber fraud for an extended period. During questioning, it was uncovered that they had run paid ads on social media and other platforms, showcasing toll-free numbers. When individuals from abroad dialed these numbers, their calls were redirected to the gang's calling software.
The perpetrators pretended to be technical support agents, convincing victims that their computers had been compromised. By utilizing screen-sharing applications, they gained unauthorized access to the victims’ systems and extracted sensitive banking information. To heighten anxiety, they would black out victims' screens, increasing compliance.
Victims were defrauded of sums ranging from $100 to $500 or more, depending on their account balances. Further investigation revealed that the proceeds from these scams were converted into cryptocurrency and funneled through hawala networks before being distributed among the criminals.
Analysis of the confiscated mobile devices and laptops indicated transactions amounting to crores of rupees. A case has been filed at the Cyber Crime Police Station under relevant sections of the BNS and IT Act. The police are actively pursuing the identification of other network members and potential victims.
The police caution the public against trusting unsolicited calls or advertisements. If someone claims to be a technical support representative and attempts to induce panic, individuals should be vigilant. They should refrain from enabling screen sharing with unknown parties or disclosing their banking information.
In the event of cyber fraud, citizens are advised to immediately contact the helpline number 1930 or file a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Portal.
