As per the official announcement from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the esteemed Santali author and composer Charan Hembram, along with Mahendra Kumar Mishra, a revered linguist and folklorist, and celebrated artists Seemanchal Patro and Sarat Kumar Patra, will be recipients of this esteemed civilian honor.
Hembram, originating from Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, is dedicated to promoting the Santali language and its rich cultural heritage. He has established several institutions focused on enhancing access to tribal cultural education and has devoted over 30 years to safeguarding indigenous dance traditions, particularly by empowering women.
On the other hand, Mahendra Kumar Mishra has tirelessly worked to document and preserve the narratives of Odisha’s tribal communities. His extensive research has resulted in around 30 publications on Odia and tribal folklore, aiding the state government in implementing multilingual education across various tribal languages.
Seemanchal Patro, a renowned folk theatre actor from Ganjam district, boasts over 80 years of experience in his craft. Initiated into the art at a young age, he excels in performing Prahlad Natak, showcasing mastery over more than 300 compositions across 35 Odissi ragas. His passion for the tradition is exemplified by his willingness to sell substantial portions of his own property to support its development.
Sarat Kumar Patra, a trailblazing Ikat weaver from Cuttack’s Tigiria area, has innovated over 50 natural dye shades while reviving traditional dyeing methods. He has also provided mentorship to over a hundred disadvantaged weavers.
The Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi, congratulated these distinguished individuals for receiving this prestigious honor.
