Bhubaneswar, May 27 (NationPress) The Jagannath Temple located in Puri is set to file for a patent on the glossary associated with the renowned 12th-century shrine, its deities, and the temple's logo.
This resolution was reached during a gathering of the Srimandir Managing Committee in the revered coastal town on Monday, presided over by the Puri King, Dibyasingha Deb.
The committee's decision comes in response to the controversy surrounding the recent designation of a newly built temple in Digha, West Bengal, as ‘Jagannath Dham’.
Arabinda Padhi, the chief administrator of the Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration (SJTA), informed the media about this decision, stating: “We will pursue a patent for the terminologies associated with Lord Jagannath, including Srimandir, Shree Jagannatha Dham, Mahaprasad, Purusottam Dham, Shreekhetra, and the Logo of Jagannath Temple. This is a significant decision approved by the managing committee during the meeting.”
The Puri King further remarked that referring to the Digha temple as ‘Jagannath Dham’ is an affront to the tradition and culture of Jagannath.
He emphasized that while many Jagannath temples exist worldwide, none are designated as ‘Dham’ except for the temple in Puri.
“We urge the state government to engage in discussions with their West Bengal counterparts to ensure that the Digha Temple is not referred to as ‘Dham’. The state government is well aware of the pertinent facts and references on this matter,” stated the Puri King.
He also criticized the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), which is part of the Digha Jagannath Temple trust established by the West Bengal government, questioning why they have not voiced opposition to the Digha Temple being labeled as ‘Jagannath Dham’, knowing that Puri is the sole location deserving of that title.
Previously, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi wrote to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, urging her administration to refrain from designating the Digha Temple as Jagannath Dham, as this title is exclusively associated with the 12th-century shrine in Puri, and its application to any other temple is inappropriate.
