Bhubaneswar, Sep 30 (NationPress) In a troubling revelation, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has published its recent report, Crime in India 2023, indicating an escalating trend of crimes against women in Odisha.
The findings show that Odisha ranks among the states and union territories with the highest crime rates against women (crimes per one lakh population) nationwide in 2023. The crime rate against women in Odisha for this year is recorded at 112.4, placing it fourth after Delhi (133.6), Telangana (124.9), and Rajasthan (114.8).
In total, 25,914 incidents of crimes against women were reported at various police stations across Odisha in 2023, marking the sixth highest figure in the country.
Furthermore, Odisha leads the nation in women-related cybercrime incidents with 761 cases, which encompass offenses like the distribution of sexually explicit content, blackmail, defamation, morphing, and the creation of fake profiles.
The NCRB report also highlighted that Odisha is among the top ten states (seventh place) for the highest number of registered rape cases, tallying 1195 incidents in the year. Additionally, there were 30 reported cases regarding the use of children for pornography and the storage of child pornography materials in both Odisha and Karnataka, ranking fourth in the country.
Odisha recorded 9,367 cases of assaults on women intending to outrage their modesty, making it the state with the highest crime rate in this category at 40.6 in 2023.
According to the NCRB’s Crime In India 2023 report, 5,611 cases were registered in Odisha concerning the kidnapping and abduction of women. Although Odisha stands seventh among the states and union territories in this category, its crime rate of 24.3 is the second highest in the nation, following Delhi’s 39.5.
