Om Birla Engages with Ex-PM Sunak; Advocates for Strengthening India-UK Relations and Honoring Mahatma Gandhi's Legacy

New Delhi, Jan 9 (NationPress) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is currently visiting Britain, with scheduled stops in Scotland and Guernsey Island. During his visit, he had a meeting with former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Thursday, where they discussed a variety of topics such as their historical connections, mutual values of parliamentary democracy, and enhancing people-to-people ties.

They also examined the implications of Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, social media, and the spread of misinformation, stressing the importance of establishing suitable regulations to confront these issues.

Taking to the social media platform X, Om Birla shared, "Had a warm meeting with H. E. Mr. Rishi Sunak, former Prime Minister of UK. We exchanged views on a wide range of issues, including our historical ties, shared values of parliamentary democracy, people-to-people contacts, and impacts of IT, AI, social media, fake news and the need to have appropriate laws to tackle such challenges."

He further updated Sunak on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus areas such as IT, agriculture, rural development, women's empowerment, and India's Nari Shakti Vandan Act, along with the New Education Policy and digital payment systems.

The Lok Sabha Speaker also highlighted how Indian cities are being developed as centers for pharmaceuticals and manufacturing, enhancing India-UK collaboration. "Thanked him for his contributions in elevating India-UK bilateral ties," Om Birla noted on his post on X.

Additionally, Om Birla paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at his statue in London, contemplating his lasting influence.

"The timeless relevance of Gandhian ideals of non-violence, truth, and self-reliance continue to inspire the framework of international relations. In a world grappling with conflicts and climate change, Gandhi ji's vision of peace and cooperation serves as a beacon of hope. By embracing these principles, the global community can address complexities with compassion and moral integrity, fostering collective progress while preserving the dignity of each one of us," he stated in a post on X.
