Guwahati, Nov 12 (NationPress) In a remarkable display of unity leading up to the forthcoming elections, prominent opposition party leaders in Assam convened on Wednesday to establish a collaborative front against the ruling BJP.
The gathering, organized by Congress, represents a pivotal effort in recent months to unify opposition entities under a shared agenda.
Key figures from Congress, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), CPI, CPI(M), and CPI(ML) participated in the private meeting. Notable Congress representatives included Gaurav Gogoi, Jitendra Singh, Rakibul Hussain, and Pradyut Bordoloi, alongside CPI(ML) leaders Vivek Das and Kanak Gogoi. CPI(M) legislators Manoranjan Talukdar and Sushanta Talukdar, along with Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, were also present.
AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi characterized the meeting as a “promising start”, emphasizing that the citizens of Assam desire a credible and unified opposition.
“This gathering sends a strong signal to the populace that we are committed to combating corruption and the syndicate culture that has thrived under the current administration,” Gogoi asserted.
“Only through unity can we restore transparency and accountability in governance.”
Debabrata Saikia, Leader of the Opposition and a senior Congress figure, stated that the meeting aimed to cultivate an “election-focused atmosphere” and enhance coordination among like-minded entities.
“We are resolved not to repeat past errors. Regular dialogues will ensure our coalition remains robust and effective,” Saikia remarked.
CPI(M) MLA Manoranjan Talukdar expressed optimism regarding the developing coalition, saying, “We are entirely hopeful about the outcomes of this initiative. This is merely the beginning of a broader unity movement.”
In a critical remark towards Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, opposition members noted that his recent comments reflected “nervousness and desperation.”
“Let him say what he wishes — even his anxiety is evident,” one leader jested. The meeting also contemplated collaborating with the Assam Samyukta Mancha to forge a comprehensive alliance prior to the elections.
Meanwhile, tensions escalated in Guwahati as hundreds of home guards protested, demanding the cessation of training for 5,000 new recruits — contributing to the politically charged environment across the state.
