Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram triggered a political storm in Odisha on 28 August after publicly accusing a party colleague of conspiring to have him removed from the Union Cabinet. The outburst, made during an emotional address to the media in Rourkela, has drawn sharp rebukes from both the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Indian National Congress (Congress).

What Oram Said

Oram alleged that certain individuals in Rourkela were spending money to defame him and engineer his exit from the Cabinet. “They think that if I am dropped, it will create an opportunity for them. Some people are trying to achieve this purpose,” he said.

He invoked his long service to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Odisha, saying he had devoted his “blood and sweat” to the party’s growth. In a combative tone, he reversed an earlier decision to retire from electoral politics. “I had earlier announced that I would not contest any more elections, but I will now contest again. I will ensure that those who have worked against me are held accountable,” he said.

Oram also disclosed that he had met the party’s state general secretary (organisation), Manas Mohanty, to raise the matter, and that the party had assured him it would be addressed. “If needed, I will apprise the central leadership about the matter. I will not spare those attempting to malign my image as a tribal leader,” he added.

BJD Condemns Remarks, Flags Law-and-Order Concern

The BJD was swift in its condemnation. Party spokesperson Lenin Mohanty described Oram’s language as violent and said it raised serious concerns about the state’s law-and-order situation. “The Minister is openly declaring that he will take the law into his own hands. How far is such a statement justified?” Mohanty asked in a press statement.

Mohanty further said Oram’s outburst indicated a conspiracy against him and reflected the extent to which internal conflict within the BJP had escalated. He described the intra-party tensions as having reached “an extreme level.”

Congress Demands Oram’s Resignation

The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Bhakta Charan Das went further, demanding that Oram resign from the Union Cabinet. Das described the minister’s remarks as contrary to democratic principles and said they undermined the constitutional system. The Congress has positioned Oram’s public threats as incompatible with holding a Union ministerial office.

Broader Significance

This is not a routine intra-party dispute. Oram is one of Odisha’s most prominent tribal leaders and has held ministerial office across multiple BJP terms at the Centre. His decision to go public with internal grievances — rather than resolving them through party channels — signals the depth of factional stress within the BJP’s Odisha unit, particularly as the party consolidates its position in the state following its 2024 assembly victory. Notably, Oram’s allegation that money is being used by “people who came from other political parties” points to tensions over political accommodations made during the BJP’s recent expansion in Odisha.

Whether the BJP central leadership intervenes to mediate or allows the dispute to play out at the state level will be closely watched in the coming days.
