Osmania University Arts College Set to Become a Trademarked Landmark

Hyderabad, Dec 2 (NationPress) The renowned Arts College building of Osmania University is set to become the third building in India to receive trademark status, following the Taj Mahal Hotel and the Bombay Stock Exchange.
The trademark application for the building's exterior design was submitted in April 2024 and has been approved for publication in the TM Journal. The registration process is anticipated to conclude within the next 4-5 months.
Subhajit Saha, a trademark agent and founder of Resolute4IP, submitted the application for Osmania University with the assistance of Prof G.B. Reddy, an expert in Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) at OU, and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
The Arts College building, which has been an essential component of Osmania University and enhances Hyderabad’s visual appeal since 1939.
This structure, crafted from pinkish granite stone, showcases a fusion of the pillar and lintel style seen in Ajanta and Ellora, along with arches that reflect the Indo-Saracenic tradition.
Nizam VII Mir Osman Ali Khan inaugurated the Arts College on December 4, 1939.
A harmonious blend of Qutub Shahi and Mughal architecture, the granite building was designed by the Belgian architect Monsieur Jasper. With 164 spacious rooms and a foundation area of 2.5 lakh square feet, the Arts College stands as one of the last significant constructions commissioned by the Nizam.
This will mark the third building in India to bear a trademark, joining the Taj Mahal Hotel and Bombay Stock Exchange.
Saha expressed optimism that the OU Arts College would evolve into a prominent brand. He further indicated that more iconic buildings with rich architectural heritage will likely pursue trademark registration. Notable structures such as T-HUB, T Works, and the Telangana Secretariat could also be potential candidates for trademark status.
Dr. GB Reddy, an IPR specialist and chair, spearheaded this initiative, emphasizing that the trademark for the Arts College building of Osmania University will strengthen its connection with alumni and stakeholders worldwide.
The notion of trademarking buildings originated in the United States. Holders of such trademarks obtain exclusive rights to utilize the building's trademark for marketing their products and services in various forms, including merchandise like cups, mugs, and gift items.
In the US, notable examples of trademarked buildings include the Empire State Building in New York, the art deco spire of the Chrysler Building, and the façade of the New York Stock Exchange. This trend has expanded globally, with landmarks like the Eiffel Tower in France and the Sydney Opera House also achieving trademark status.
