New Delhi, Oct 30 (NationPress) This year, over 2790 Indian nationals have faced deportation from the United States due to unauthorized residency, as confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday. This action followed a meticulous verification of their identities and nationalities by Indian officials.
"As of yesterday, we have recorded more than 2790 Indian nationals who failed to comply with legal residency criteria. They were residing there illegally, and we have confirmed their identities and nationalities, leading to their return," stated MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during a weekly media briefing in New Delhi.
In response to inquiries about the deportation of Indians from other nations, Jaiswal mentioned that approximately 100 Indian nationals were also deported from the United Kingdom after Indian authorities affirmed their national status.
India has consistently reiterated its firm stance against illegal migration, while also highlighting its commitment to fostering legitimate migration channels.
"Since January this year, 2417 Indian nationals have been deported or repatriated from the United States. We aim to encourage legal migration pathways while standing firmly against illegal migration," Jaiswal remarked last month.
Among the recent deportees was Harjit Kaur, a 73-year-old Sikh woman from Punjab, who returned to India from the US in September after being held by California authorities during a routine check-in with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
"Whenever someone lacks legal status in any country and is referred to us with documentation claiming Indian nationality, we conduct thorough background checks to confirm nationality, allowing us to facilitate their return. This process has been consistent for deportations from the United States," Jaiswal added.
