Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, April 5 (NationPress) With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections set for April 23, political parties are now in the final stretch of candidate selection and campaign efforts.
The Congress party, a significant partner in the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, has been allocated 28 constituencies for the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections. The party has officially declared its candidate for the Melur Assembly constituency.
After several days of internal deliberations and reported disagreements among senior members, Congress has confirmed P. Viswanathan as its candidate for Melur, thus ending the speculation surrounding this seat.
As per party insiders, the delay in announcing the candidate for Melur was due to differing views among senior Congress leaders, including MPs Manickam Tagore and Karti Chidambaram.
There were also proposals to nominate a Youth Congress leader from this constituency. However, it is believed that the final choice was swayed by senior leader P. Chidambaram, whose involvement was crucial in Viswanathan’s selection.
P. Viswanathan is an experienced Congress leader and a former MP from the Kancheepuram constituency. He currently holds the position of national secretary for the Congress and oversees party operations in Telangana.
Renowned for his organizational skills, Viswanathan had recently shown interest in contesting from a general constituency, which has now come to fruition with his nomination from Melur.
Previously, Congress had issued a list of candidates for 27 constituencies across Tamil Nadu, including significant seats like Ponneri, Tiruperumbudur, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Karaikudi, Sivakasi, Krishnagiri, and Ambasamudram.
The party is fielding a blend of seasoned leaders along with new faces as part of its strategy to bolster its foothold in the state.
With the announcement of Viswanathan’s candidacy, Congress has now finalized its lineup of candidates for all 28 constituencies allocated to it under the alliance.
The focus is now on ramping up campaign efforts, as the DMK-led alliance seeks to maintain its governance in Tamil Nadu amidst a competitive landscape involving the AIADMK alliance and other regional factions.
As the countdown to polling day begins, all attention is on how these last-minute candidate selections will shape the electoral landscape in key constituencies.
