Chennai, Oct 30 (NationPress) AIADMK General Secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday emphasized his enduring plea for freedom fighter and spiritual leader Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honor in India.
Addressing the media after paying floral tributes at Thevar’s memorial located in Pasumpon village near Kamuthi in Ramanathapuram district, Palaniswami reflected on the profound contributions of the venerated leader, describing him as a beacon of nationalism, sacrifice, and spiritual devotion.
“On this special day, marking Thevar Ayya’s 118th birth anniversary and Guru Puja day, I, alongside senior leaders, former ministers, and MLAs, paid homage at his memorial on behalf of the AIADMK,” Palaniswami stated.
He mentioned that under the leadership of former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran, Thevar’s birth anniversary was officially recognized as a state celebration, a tradition that continues today.
Palaniswami praised Thevar’s unwavering nationalism and spiritual essence, asserting, “He lived his life treating divinity and patriotism as the two guiding lights.”
He highlighted the honor bestowed upon Thevar, recalling how revolutionary leader M.G. Ramachandran unveiled Thevar’s full-length portrait in the State Assembly, and later, under Jayalalithaa, a golden covering weighing about 13 kilograms was placed over Thevar’s idol at his memorial.
Reflecting on Thevar’s struggles, Palaniswami noted that the leader spent nearly 4,000 days in prison fighting for various movements aimed at the welfare of the people.
He also emphasized Thevar’s electoral triumphs in the Aruppukottai parliamentary and Mudukulathur assembly constituencies, showcasing his immense popularity among the people.
Characterizing Thevar as a man of unparalleled generosity, Palaniswami remarked that he had donated thousands of acres of land to the underprivileged and Scheduled Caste families for their upliftment.
Reiterating the AIADMK’s persistent demand, Palaniswami stated, “We have previously communicated with the Union Home Minister to request that the Bharat Ratna be awarded to Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar as recognition for his immense contributions to the nation and humanity. Conferring this award to such a noble soul would be a matter of pride for the entire nation.”
