Chennai, Oct 30 (NationPress) On Thursday, Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin commemorated the legacy of freedom fighter and national hero Muthuramalinga Thevar on his 118th birth anniversary and the 63rd Guru Puja, celebrated as a festival throughout the state.
Arriving via military helicopter from Madurai, Vice President Radhakrishnan made his way to Pasumpon village in Ramanathapuram district, where he honored Thevar's statue with a garland and presented floral tributes.
He was joined by senior BJP officials, including State president Nainar Nagenthran and national executive member H. Raja, during the ceremony.
After the event, Radhakrishnan praised Muthuramalinga Thevar's unwavering commitment and vision for society. He remarked, "Thevar was a dedicated son of the land who generously distributed a significant part of his land to individuals from other communities. Celebrating him is synonymous with celebrating nationalism and divinity. As a leader of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's Indian National Army, he epitomized truth, integrity, and fearless patriotism," he expressed.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, accompanied by DMK MP Kanimozhi and senior ministers, also laid floral offerings at Thevar's statue located at Deivapratimai in Koripalayam, Madurai.
Stalin subsequently paid his respects at the Marudhu Pandiyar statue near Teppakulam, Madurai, marking their 224th Guru Puja.
He later arrived at Pasumpon to garland Thevar’s memorial and address a gathering.
In his address, the Chief Minister stated, "We gather today to honor a leader who dedicated his life to India's freedom and social unity. It was Kalaignar Karunanidhi who, in 1969, designated this site as a memorial and declared Thevar’s birth anniversary a State festival in 2007."
Extensive three-tier security measures were implemented across Ramanathapuram district for the occasion. Southern Region Inspector General Prem Anand Sinha oversaw the security operations, supported by a DIG, 20 Superintendents, and 27 Additional Superintendents of Police.
More than 10,000 police personnel were deployed to maintain order and safety as thousands of devotees and political supporters assembled to pay their respects. The day's events, characterized by reverence and solidarity, reflected the lasting legacy of Muthuramalinga Thevar, a beacon of courage, spiritual devotion, and national pride in Tamil Nadu's history.
