Bhubaneswar, Dec 15 (NationPress) The former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Odisha Assembly, Naveen Patnaik, expressed his condemnation on Monday regarding the violent assault on supporters of Pranab Kumar Balabantaray, a senior leader of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and ex-MLA, which took place in the Dharmasala region of Jajpur district on Sunday. He demanded that immediate and strict measures be taken against those responsible for the violence.
The BJD leader did not hold back in criticizing the state government and Odisha Police, accusing them of being passive observers and failing to act against the perpetrators despite the violent act occurring in broad daylight.
Patnaik took to his X account to voice his concerns, stating, “I firmly denounce the act of vandalism and the severe attack on the supporters of Pranab Balabantaray, the former MLA of Dharmasala and a senior BJD leader, following their forceful entry into his residence. The police's inaction and the government's silence, despite the incident happening during the day, is shocking.”
He further questioned the message the BJP government was sending by allowing lawlessness and violence to take root, asserting that the peaceful citizens of Odisha will not stand for this. “There should be prompt and decisive action against the offenders,” Patnaik added.
In a significant altercation at Balabantaray's farmhouse located at Panturi under Jenapur police limits in Dharmasala, several individuals sustained serious injuries during a political clash on Sunday afternoon.
Balabantaray, speaking to the media, accused supporters of Independent Dharmasala MLA Himanshu Sekhar Sahoo of attacking approximately 30 to 40 of his supporters while they were enjoying a meal at his farmhouse. He claimed that about 20 vehicles were vandalized and around 25 of his supporters, including women, were injured.
In response, several BJD leaders, along with Balabantaray and his supporters, have initiated a sit-in protest in front of the DGP Camp office in Bhubaneswar, urging for swift and serious action against the individuals involved in the attack.
