Ahmedabad, Feb 11 (NationPress) The police in Ahmedabad have initiated an inquiry into the enigmatic passing of 23-year-old physiotherapy graduate Drishti Prajapati, whose body was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan in a hospital room located in Naranpura.

Drishti, originally from Meghaninagar, had been employed at Shreeji Wellness in the same vicinity. Her family asserts that she was compelled to take her own life as a result of emotional and physical mistreatment from her former fiancé, Rajinikanth Prajapati.

The police at Gujarat University have filed a case against Rajinikanth following the revelations in Drishti’s suicide note. Investigators are currently examining claims of sexual coercion and emotional abuse, which are believed to have led her to this tragic decision.

Drishti’s devastated family is advocating for justice, calling for stringent measures against those they hold accountable for her distress.

As per police sources, Drishti had been suffering from depression following the dissolution of her engagement with Rajinikanth, the son of Bharatbhai Nenaji Prajapati from Shahibaug.

Her family alleges that Drishti had uncovered Rajinikanth’s purported affair with another woman, prompting the collapse of their relationship. In a note left at the scene, Drishti allegedly accused Rajinikanth of coercing her into a sexual relationship and inflicting emotional and physical harm. Drishti’s mother, Bharti, mentioned that her daughter had confided in her regarding the pressure and threats from Rajinikanth.

The mistreatment, according to her, intensified after their engagement in April 2024. On the morning of her death, Drishti informed her family that she was going to visit a patient in Shahibaug before proceeding to her job in Naranpura. When she became unresponsive to calls, her family grew concerned. Shortly thereafter, they received a harrowing call about her suicide. Upon arriving at the hospital, they discovered her lifeless body and swiftly notified the authorities.

As reported by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the state documented 8,050 suicides in 2020, which rose to 8,789 in 2021, indicating a 9.1 percent increase. The figure further climbed to 9,002 suicides in 2022. Between 2020 and 2022, Gujarat recorded a total of 25,478 suicides.

Among its cities, Ahmedabad had the highest tally with 3,280 cases, followed by Surat with 2,862, and Rajkot with 1,287. The leading causes identified for these suicides include family issues (2,285 cases in 2022), health problems (1,747 cases), and marital disputes (367 cases). Significantly, homemakers represented a considerable number, with 1,761 cases in 2022.

Alarmingly, the suicide rate among daily wage workers has escalated by over 50 percent in the last five years. Currently, around nine daily wage workers take their lives every day in the state. Additionally, student suicides have shown a troubling rise. Between April 2020 and March 2023, 495 students, including 246 females, ended their lives. This marks a 21 percent increase in student suicides in the 2022-23 financial year compared to 2020-21.
