New Delhi, March 21 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday celebrated the nation’s historic milestone of surpassing 1 billion tonnes of coal production in the fiscal year 2024-25, describing it as a “proud moment for India” and acknowledging the unwavering commitment and effort of individuals in this sector.

“Achieving the impressive landmark of 1 billion tonnes in coal production is an extraordinary accomplishment, showcasing our dedication to energy security, economic growth, and self-reliance. This milestone also mirrors the commitment and efforts of everyone involved in the industry,” PM Modi stated.

The Prime Minister's remarks followed Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy’s announcement on X, confirming that India has reached this significant milestone.

Reddy highlighted that this exceptional achievement in coal production occurred 11 days earlier than last fiscal year's output of 997.83 million tonnes (MT), emphasizing India’s notable advancements in meeting its energy needs and propelling industrial, agricultural, and economic growth, as stated by the minister.

From April to December 2024, India’s coal imports decreased by 8.4 percent, resulting in foreign exchange savings of approximately $5.43 billion (Rs 42,315.7 crore) compared to the same period last year.

The record production underscores the effectiveness of the Government’s strategic reforms and policies, including modifications to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act and the introduction of the coal sector to private enterprises via the commercial auctioning of coal blocks. These initiatives have significantly enhanced the availability of domestic coal, progressively replacing imports and contributing substantially to foreign exchange savings, the minister noted.

This accomplishment aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and highlights the Ministry of Coal’s ongoing initiatives to promote self-reliance in the energy sector while ensuring sustainable development, he remarked.

This achievement extends beyond mere coal production; it represents a vital step toward securing long-term energy security and advancing India’s overall development. By adopting advanced mining techniques, optimizing logistics, and endorsing sustainable practices, the coal sector is central to fortifying India’s energy infrastructure and enhancing economic resilience, Reddy added.

The success of the coal sector is credited to the diligent efforts of coal Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), private entities, and the committed workforce of approximately 500,000 mine workers across more than 350 coal mines. These coal miners have faced and overcome numerous challenges with unparalleled dedication, playing a crucial role in reaching this historic achievement. Coal accounts for about 55 percent of India's energy mix, with around 74 percent of the country’s electricity generated by coal-based power facilities. This highlights the essential role of coal in energizing India’s economy and ensuring energy security, the minister emphasized.

In alignment with the ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision, this milestone positions India towards achieving complete self-reliance in the energy sector. Through ongoing strategic reforms, technological advancements, and a commitment to responsible resource management, India’s path toward an Atmanirbhar Bharat remains well on course. This achievement is a testament to the nation’s steadfast commitment to securing a self-reliant, energy-secure future for generations ahead, Reddy concluded.
