Imphal, Nov 15 (NationPress) On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the cornerstone for the Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) at Songpejang village in the Kangpokpi district of Manipur via a virtual ceremony.
The event was attended by Kangpokpi Deputy Commissioner Mahesh Chaudhari along with several senior officials.
During his speech, the Deputy Commissioner emphasized that this foundation stone-laying marks a significant milestone for the district.
He pointed out that although there is an existing EMRS at Sapormeina, the new institution is expected to transform the educational landscape in surrounding areas.
He further noted that both educators and learners would experience substantial advantages, as the success of the Sapormeina EMRS has already fostered healthy competition among local schools.
The Deputy Commissioner expressed appreciation for all officials, including the Chairman and representatives from Civil Society Organizations, who participated in the program, and extended his thanks to the Prime Minister.
The EMRS initiative, led by the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs, aims to deliver quality, free, and standard residential education to Scheduled Tribe (ST) students from Class 6 to Class 12 in tribal-rich regions.
These schools cater specifically to tribal students in areas populated by tribal communities and are fully residential, featuring separate hostels for boys and girls, with staff members required to reside on the premises.
In alignment with the celebration of Jan Jantiya Gaurav Diwas, the Churachandpur district administration also participated virtually in the Prime Minister's event from the National Jan Jantiya Gaurav Diwas celebration in Gujarat.
At the same time, similar live public broadcasts of Prime Minister Modi's address were organized by Sub-Divisional Officers (SDOs) at the district's sub-divisional levels.
A senior official in Imphal stated that the government aims to establish 728 EMRS, benefiting approximately 3.5 lakh Scheduled Tribe students nationwide.
Currently, 725 such schools have been approved across the country, with 477 of them reported to be operational.
