New Delhi, Aug 4 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital today to pay his respects to Shibu Soren, the founder of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, who sadly passed away earlier on Monday.
The 81-year-old leader had been receiving treatment at the hospital for over a month due to complications related to his kidneys.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi took the time to meet with Soren’s son, Hemant Soren, who is the current Chief Minister of Jharkhand, along with other family members, to personally convey his condolences.
“I visited Sir Ganga Ram Hospital to pay tribute to Shri Shibu Soren Ji. I also met his family. My thoughts are with Hemant Ji, Kalpana Ji, and all those who admired Shri Shibu Soren Ji,” PM Modi shared on X.
The announcement of Soren's passing was made by his son, Hemant Soren, on Monday.
“Our respected Guru Dishom has departed from us. Today, I feel a profound emptiness…” Hemant expressed on his X account in Hindi.
The hospital released a statement saying, “He passed away after battling a prolonged illness. He had been suffering from kidney issues and had also experienced a stroke a month and a half ago. He had been on life support for the last month.”
The Prime Minister took to X to express his sorrow over Soren’s demise, commemorating him as a “grassroots leader” who dedicated his life to advancing the welfare of tribal communities and the underprivileged.
“Shri Shibu Soren Ji was a grassroots leader who worked tirelessly for the people. He was especially devoted to empowering tribal communities, the impoverished, and the marginalized,” he added.
“I am deeply saddened by his passing. My thoughts are with his family and supporters. I spoke with Jharkhand CM Shri Hemant Soren Ji to express my condolences. Om Shanti,” he concluded.
Soren had been at Sri Ganga Ram Hospital for over a month due to kidney complications, under the care of Dr. A.K. Bhalla, the Chairman of Nephrology, and a dedicated team from Neurology and ICU.
Affectionately known as “Guruji” or “Dishom Guru” in his home state, Soren served as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand three times: in 2005, 2008-2009, and 2009-2010. His terms were often brief due to political hurdles.
Born on January 11, 1944, in Nemra village, which was part of Bihar at the time, Soren was a member of the Santal tribal community.
At the young age of 18, he founded the Santhal Navyuvak Sangh, an organization aimed at tribal liberation and land rights.
In 1972, he co-founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha alongside A.K. Roy and Binod Bihari Mahato, advocating for a separate Jharkhand state and the upliftment of tribal people, later assuming the role of General Secretary.
Soren was instrumental in the movement for a separate state, playing a significant role in the establishment of Jharkhand in 2000.
Throughout his four-decade political journey, he was elected to the Lok Sabha eight times and served two terms in the Rajya Sabha, with his second term still ongoing.
