His passing was revealed by his son, Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, on Monday. Soren, a founding figure of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), played a significant role in advocating for tribal rights and empowerment.
On social media platform X, PM Modi stated, "Shri Shibu Soren Ji was a grassroots leader who advanced in public life through unwavering commitment to the populace. His enthusiasm for empowering tribal communities and the underprivileged was remarkable."
He added, "I am deeply saddened by his passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and supporters. I had a conversation with Jharkhand CM Shri Hemant Soren Ji to convey my condolences. Om Shanti."
Shibu Soren passed away at a Delhi hospital at the age of 81 after battling a prolonged illness.
"Respected Guru Dishom has departed from us. I feel a profound emptiness today..." expressed Hemant Soren on his X handle in Hindi.
The hospital confirmed his death, stating, "He succumbed after enduring a prolonged illness. He had been dealing with a kidney condition and suffered a stroke a month and a half ago. He had been on life support for the past month."
Soren had been receiving treatment at Sri Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi for over a month due to kidney-related issues, under the care of Dr. A.K. Bhalla, Chairman of Nephrology, along with a dedicated team from Neurology and ICU.
Affectionately known as "Guruji" or "Dishom Guru" in his home state, Soren held the position of Chief Minister of Jharkhand three times: in 2005, 2008-2009, and 2009-2010, although his terms were often brief due to political strife.
Born on January 11, 1944, in Nemra village, which was part of Bihar (now Jharkhand), Shibu Soren was a member of the Santal (Santhal) tribal group.
At the age of 18, he established the Santhal Navyuvak Sangh, an organization aimed at tribal liberation and land rights.
In 1972, he co-founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha alongside A.K. Roy and Binod Bihari Mahato, advocating for a separate Jharkhand state and the upliftment of tribal communities, later becoming the JMM's General Secretary.
His significant contributions were instrumental in the formation of the separate state of Jharkhand in 2000.
Throughout his four-decade political career, Soren was elected to the Lok Sabha eight times and served two terms in the Rajya Sabha, with his second term currently ongoing.
