New Delhi, Aug 10 (NationPress) Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav on Sunday applauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for initiating Project Lion in 2020, which has resulted in an increase in the wildcat population from 674 to 891 as of now.
During an event commemorating World Lion Day 2025 and launching a Mega Wildlife Conservation Drive at Barda Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat, Minister Yadav stated, "Narendra Modi, initially as the Chief Minister of Gujarat and later as the Prime Minister, prioritized the conservation and protection of the 'King of the Jungle.'"
"The Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo persica) symbolizes global success in wildlife conservation. On this World Lion Day, we commemorate their extraordinary revival. From just 284 lions in 1990, the population has surged to 891 in 2025—a 32% increase since 2020 and over a 70% rise in the last decade," he added.
He expressed joy over the notable increase in India’s lion population, now standing at 891, up from 674 in 2020.
Bhupender Yadav commended every forest official, wildlife enthusiast, and environmental advocate for their contributions to this success.
"It is inspiring to see that such remarkable growth was made possible through collective dedication and policies focused on co-existence," he stated, unveiling a Rs 180-crore wildlife conservation initiative aimed at enhancing Lion Conservation and Ecotourism.
"It is a source of immense national pride that the Asiatic lion thrives exclusively in Gir. Our unwavering conservation efforts have doubled their population in the last decade, offering hope for global wildlife protection. Let today’s inauguration inspire everyone to safeguard this magnificent creature—the true emblem of Gujarat’s heritage and India’s ecological vitality," Union Minister Yadav remarked.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel reaffirmed the state’s commitment to protecting and increasing the Asiatic lion population, declaring that the state remains the global sanctuary for this iconic species.
CM Patel highlighted that the inauguration of new habitats, advanced veterinary care, and eco-tourism infrastructure worth Rs 180 crore marks a significant achievement for lion conservation in the state.
He noted that, after 143 years, lions are back in the Barda region, restoring ecological balance and enriching the state’s natural heritage.
Thousands of students across 11 districts participated virtually in the World Lion Day 2025 celebrations in Gujarat.
