'Positive Move for India': Opposition Leaders React to PM Modi's Talks with Iranian President
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 13 (NationPress) In a significant development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian regarding the ongoing turmoil in West Asia and the rising tensions within the region. This conversation elicited varied responses from political leaders on Friday, with some opposition figures expressing support while others voiced concerns about India's foreign policy and the overarching regional dynamics.
The Prime Minister took to the social media platform X to share insights from their dialogue, indicating that both leaders addressed the worsening conditions in the area.
“I had a detailed discussion with Iranian President, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, focusing on the critical situation in the region. I expressed profound concern about the escalating tensions, the tragic loss of civilian lives, and the destruction of essential infrastructure,” PM Modi stated on Thursday.
He underscored that safeguarding Indian citizens and ensuring the seamless flow of vital supplies remain India's foremost priorities.
“The security of Indian nationals, along with the unimpeded transport of goods and energy, is paramount. I reiterated India's dedication to peace and stability, advocating for dialogue and diplomacy,” the PM emphasized.
In response to this development, Lok Sabha member Pappu Yadav remarked that the Prime Minister's outreach, if it signifies India’s acknowledgment of its longstanding friendship with Iran, could be a positive initiative for the nation.
Speaking to IANS, Yadav commented, “While I am not fully informed about the specifics of the conversation, if Prime Minister Modi recalls the bond with Iran, it would certainly reflect positively on India. Iran has been a historic ally, and we need to support it. Developments in the Middle East will have a considerable impact on India.”
On the other hand, Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat expressed skepticism about the efficacy of the diplomatic engagement, referencing recent incidents in the area.
“These discussions were reported two days ago, yet within 24 hours, media reports surfaced about an attack in the Strait of Hormuz on a cargo vessel en route from Thailand to India. Reports indicated fatalities among the crew and one individual unaccounted for. This prompts questions regarding the nature of the discussions,” Bhagat remarked.
He further noted that India’s foreign policy appears convoluted and suggested that the Prime Minister's earlier engagement with Israel may have created ambiguity regarding India's relations with Iran.
Meanwhile, Bihar Minister Ashok Choudhary assured that the Prime Minister is attuned to the concerns of the populace, asserting that the government will undertake necessary measures to maintain stability.
“We believe the government will implement all required efforts to ensure the public faces no hardships. Steps will be taken to provide alternatives if necessary and to reinforce existing systems,” he stated.
BJP Bihar President Sanjay Saraogi accused the opposition of inciting unnecessary panic concerning the situation.
“The opposition is attempting to create undue alarm, which is inappropriate given the current circumstances. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken with the President of Iran, and the government is diligently working to guarantee that vessels carrying oil and other essential supplies to India continue to arrive without hindrance,” he asserted.
Saraogi acknowledged the recent spike in demand for LPG but assured that the administration is closely monitoring the situation and taking appropriate actions. He added that both the Central government and the Bihar government are vigilantly observing developments.
