Is There a Political Showdown in Bengal Over Supratim Sarkar's New Role as Kolkata Police Chief?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 31 (NationPress) A fierce political battle has erupted in West Bengal regarding the appointment of Supratim Sarkar, the former additional director general (South Bengal), as the new Commissioner of Kolkata Police, a decision officially confirmed by the West Bengal Police Directorate on Friday.
Prominent leaders from the BJP in West Bengal alleged that Sarkar received this position as a reward from the Mamata Banerjee-led government for his handling of the turmoil in Sandeshkhali, a cluster of islands in the North 24 Parganas district, in 2024, when the region faced significant unrest due to the mistreatment of locals, particularly women, by the now-suspended Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his affiliates.
“Sarkar, in his capacity as the then additional director general (South Bengal), managed the situation in Sandeshkhali to favor the ruling Trinamool Congress. He has consistently shown himself to be an opportunistic officer. He had strong ties with the previous Left Front government and has now aligned himself with the current Trinamool Congress leadership,” stated the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, on Saturday.
The former president of the West Bengal BJP and current Union Minister, Sukanta Majumdar, reminisced about how Sarkar, during his tenure as the police superintendent of Hooghly district, led police actions against Trinamool Congress activists who were protesting the land acquisition for the Tata Motors small car project in Singur.
“At that time, he was a trusted officer of the late Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya. Now, he has demonstrated his loyalty to Mamata Banerjee,” remarked Majumdar.
In contrast, state education minister Bratya Basu dismissed these claims as unfounded, asserting that Sarkar's appointment was simply part of standard administrative rotations. “The BJP can make any claims. They are the ones who honored individuals accused of serious crimes in Unnao,” Basu asserted.
Sarkar succeeded the former Kolkata Police Commissioner, Manoj Verma, who has been reassigned as the director of securities. Additionally, on Friday, the state government appointed Peeyush Pandey to take over from Rajeev Kumar as the Acting Director General of the state police, following Kumar’s retirement on Saturday.
