New Delhi, Dec 16 (NationPress) President Droupadi Murmu participated in the 'At-Home' reception at the Army House located in the national capital on the eve of Vijay Diwas, which celebrates India's victory over Pakistan in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
According to a post on the President's official Twitter account, "President Droupadi Murmu attended 'At Home' reception at Army House on the eve of 'Vijay Diwas'."
Each year, Vijay Diwas is observed on December 16 to honor India's success against Pakistan in the 13-day war, which culminated in Pakistan signing the instrument of surrender in Dhaka and the subsequent independence of Bangladesh (formerly known as East Pakistan).
Also present at the event were Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who attended the event hosted by Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi on Sunday.
The President engaged with various guests during the reception.
The Indian Army further noted that Vice-President Dhankhar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh interacted with numerous veterans, members of the diplomatic community, sports figures, and others.
The reception allowed the President, Vice-President, and Defence Minister to connect with #Veterans, #Veernaris, the diplomatic community, sports personalities, notable figures, Asha School Children, and individuals excelling in diverse fields, as stated in the post on X.
The event also provided a platform for the tribal community to display their talents.
The dignitaries engaged in meaningful conversations with VeerNaris, honoring their sacrifices for the nation, according to the post.
On the preceding Friday, President Murmu paid homage to the heroes who lost their lives in the Parliament attack in 2001, affirming that the nation stands united against terrorism.
"I pay my humble tribute to the bravehearts who sacrificed their lives defending our Parliament on this day in 2001. Their courage and selfless service continue to inspire us. The nation remains deeply grateful to them and their families. On this day, I reiterate India's unwavering resolve to combat terrorism. Our nation stands united against the forces of terror," President Murmu tweeted.
Fifty years ago, the largest military surrender following World War II occurred when 93,000 soldiers of the Pakistan Army surrendered to Indian forces, leading to the liberation of Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan. This day is commemorated annually as 'Vijay Diwas'.
