New Delhi, July 17 (NationPress) President Droupadi Murmu is set to present the esteemed Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 Awards for urban cleanliness at a national event hosted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, this Thursday.

In its ninth iteration, Swachh Survekshan (SS) 2024-25 stands as the globe's largest urban cleanliness assessment and is a fundamental aspect of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U).

This ceremony will reveal India’s cleanest cities, celebrating the remarkable initiatives taken by urban local bodies to further this mission.

This year's awards will be distributed across four main categories: Super Swachh League (SSL) Cities, the leading three clean cities across five distinct population categories, Special Categories including Ganga Towns, Cantonment Boards, SafaiMitra Suraksha, and Mahakumbh, and the State Level Awards for Promising Clean Cities of States/UTs. A grand total of 78 awards will be presented during this event.

Launched in 2016 with a mere 73 urban local bodies, the Swachh Survekshan initiative has remarkably expanded to encompass over 4,500 cities. The 2024-25 edition continues this legacy, highlighting the theme of 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle', as stated by the MoHUA.

More than 3,000 trained assessors conducted thorough inspections in every ward nationwide over a span of 45 days.

This year's evaluation stands out for its inclusivity and scale, as the ministry reported that over 11 lakh households were surveyed, while public involvement reached unprecedented heights with 14 crore citizens engaging through face-to-face encounters, the Swachhata App, MyGov, and various social media channels.

Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 utilized a structured, technology-oriented methodology based on 10 parameters and 54 indicators, providing an extensive overview of sanitation and waste management across urban India.

The ministry also highlighted a unique aspect of this year's edition: the establishment of the Super Swachh League (SSL) — a special league that acknowledges cities demonstrating consistent excellence in cleanliness.

The SSL comprises cities that have been ranked in the top three at least once in the past three years and remain within the top 20% of their population category this year. This league aims to reward ongoing excellence and motivate others to improve.

For the first time, cities have been classified into five population-based categories for fairer assessments: Very Small Cities (population under 20,000), Small Cities (20,000 – 50,000), Medium Cities (50,000 – 300,000), Big Cities (300,000 – 1,000,000), and Million-Plus Cities (over 1,000,000).

Each category has been evaluated using criteria tailored to its size and requirements, ensuring that smaller cities can compete on equal footing and be recognized for their advancements.

Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 remains a guiding light for India's urban transformation, fostering behavioral changes, rewarding excellence, and inspiring collective civic pride throughout the nation.

Point of View

It is vital to recognize the significance of the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 awards in promoting cleanliness and sustainability across urban India.
