Giridih (Jharkhand), June 16 (NationPress) The Dumri block in Jharkhand’s Giridih district has been shaken following the tragic death of Panchayat Sevak Sukhlal Mahato, who tragically ingested poison within the block office premises after leveling harassment allegations against four persons, including the Block Development Officer (BDO) and the spouse of the local Mukhiya.
This incident led to a wave of anger, prompting hundreds to stage a dharna with Mahato’s body outside the block office from Sunday night until 12:30 p.m. on Monday.
The situation escalated when Dumri MLA Jairam Mahato joined the protest on Monday morning, demanding justice for the victim.
Negotiations took place later between Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Santosh Gupta, acting on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner, and the protesting family along with the MLA.
After receiving assurances from the administration, the family decided to conclude the protest and proceed with the last rites.
The administration has committed to filing an FIR against the four accused—Dumri BDO Anvesha Ona, Employment Officer Anil Kumar, and Parmeshwar Nayak, the husband of the Baltharia Panchayat Mukhiya—who were named by Mahato in a letter alleging mental harassment.
Furthermore, a government job will be allocated to a dependent of the deceased as part of the resolution.
Sukhlal Mahato, a resident of Kulgo village, served as Panchayat Sevak in Baltharia village under Dumri block of Giridih district. On June 13, he ingested pesticide on the block office grounds after submitting a complaint letter to the local MLA regarding the officials’ persistent mental harassment.
He succumbed to the poisoning during treatment at RIMS in Ranchi on June 15.
Following his death, demonstrators brought his body to the block office and held an overnight protest.
In response to this tragic incident, the Giridih district administration had already established an inquiry committee on June 14, as directed by the state government.
The committee is made up of Additional Collector Vijay Singh Birua, SDM (Sariya-Bagodar) Santosh Kumar Gupta, Headquarters DSP Neeraj Kumar Singh, and Dr. Ravi Maharshi.
