Protests Erupt at Hyderabad College Over Alleged Bathroom Video Recordings; Seven Individuals Under Investigation

Hyderabad, January 2 (NationPress) - Authorities have detained seven individuals for interrogation after a wave of protests erupted among female students at a private engineering college concerning alleged video recordings in hostel restrooms. The mobile devices belonging to hostel staff have been confiscated, and police are diligently examining them to verify if any videos were taken.

CMR Engineering College, located in Medchal on the outskirts of Hyderabad, became the center of protests late on Wednesday night.

Claiming a violation of privacy, the students organized a demonstration and called for strict action against the alleged offenders.

They asserted that certain hostel staff members had clandestinely recorded videos of female students in the bathrooms.

Representatives from student unions, including the ABVP, expressed solidarity with the protesting students, who continued their demonstration into the early hours.

Leaders from the ABVP demanded accountability from the college management, alleging that female students faced blackmail.

The protests were ignited when some female students observed handprints on the glass of the bathroom ventilators.

The students raised concerns over insufficient security measures at the hostel, and claimed that despite bringing the issue to the management's attention, no actions were taken.

They also reported that when the warden was informed about the alleged video recordings, he made inappropriate remarks.

Student leaders warned that if any videos recorded in the bathrooms were to appear on social media, Malla Reddy, a former minister and current BRS MLA who owns the college, would be held responsible.

The protesters vandalized the security room windows in their frustration.

Law enforcement officials promptly arrived at the college and attempted to calm the demonstrators by promising to take action.

According to police, they will file a case based on the complaints received and conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

Although no formal complaint has been lodged, preventing the registration of a First Information Report (FIR), the police have detained seven hostel workers for questioning.

The mobile phones of these workers have been taken for examination to determine if any recordings were made.
