Chandigarh, Jan 5 (NationPress) The announcement by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government to offer a health insurance coverage of Rs 10 lakh to 65 lakh families in Punjab has been labeled as a collection of deceptions intended to mislead the public, as per the BJP on Monday. They assert that the government is only disbursing Rs 1 lakh as the insurance premium to the insurance firm.
BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia questioned, "If the government is only paying a premium of Rs 1 lakh, how can the insurance company provide coverage of Rs 10 lakh?"
Kalia noted that the government asserts that it will pay Rs 1 lakh in premium to United India Insurance Company to cover 65 lakh families within a population of three crore, while the remaining financial responsibility is shouldered by the state health agency, implying that the financial burden ultimately rests on the state's treasury.
He raised concerns about how the government plans to manage such a substantial expenditure from the state treasury when it struggles to fund old-age and widow pensions.
Kalia further added that Punjab currently faces a debt exceeding Rs 4 lakh crore, with a per capita debt standing at Rs 1,23,274. He also pointed out a significant decline of 40.35 percent in the state’s share from the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Moreover, he mentioned that the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has outstanding dues exceeding Rs 10,500 crore, making it difficult to fathom how the government could bear such a hefty cost for the medical care of its citizens.
Kalia concluded that the AAP government's health insurance scheme is simply a collection of empty promises and false narratives. He warned that the citizens of Punjab have recognized the reality and that the government must answer for what he termed as deception.
