Punjab Police Achieves Major Breakthroughs in Addressing High-Profile Crimes and Attacks on Law Enforcement in 2024

Chandigarh, Dec 31 (NationPress) In the face of numerous attacks on police establishments and high-profile murders, the Punjab Police, spearheaded by Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, has made notable advancements in law enforcement, according to a senior police official's statement on Tuesday.
Inspector General of Police Sukhchain Singh Gill informed the media, “From the series of attacks on police establishments to the high-profile murders of Hindu leader Vikas Bagga in Nangal and former terrorist Rattandeep Singh, the Punjab Police has pursued justice relentlessly.”
Other significant cases that have been resolved include the hand grenade explosion at a residence in Sector 10, Chandigarh, the grenade attack at a petrol station in Mansa, and the triple homicide case in Ferozepur.
During a year-end briefing, Gill highlighted that the Punjab Police's decisive campaign against drugs, directed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has led to the arrest of 8,935 drug traffickers and suppliers, including 210 major players, following the registration of 12,255 FIRs, among which 1,213 were commercial, this year.
He noted that police teams have seized 1,099 kg of heroin, 991 kg of opium, 414 quintals of poppy husk, and 2.94 lakh pharmaceuticals including tablets, capsules, injections, and vials of opioids throughout the state, with drug money valued at Rs 14.73 crore being recovered.
Gill further stated, “In another major triumph against drug trafficking in the state, the police executed preventive detention orders against two notorious drug traffickers—Gurdeep Singh and Avtar Singh—utilizing special provisions under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotics Drugs Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act.”
Section 3 of the PIT-NDPS Act empowers the government to detain such drug traffickers preventively, aiming to halt their involvement in the illicit drug trade.
Moreover, the IGP mentioned that the police have confiscated 531 properties valued at Rs 335 crore from major smugglers this year. Additionally, 71 drug users caught with small drug quantities have opted for rehabilitation treatment under Section 64-A of the NDPS Act.
