Chandigarh, March 26 (NationPress) Continuing the battle against drugs "Yudh Nashian Virudh" initiated under the guidance of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to eliminate the drug crisis from the state for the 26th consecutive day, Punjab Police on Wednesday executed raids at 483 locations, resulting in the apprehension of 77 drug traffickers following the filing of 55 first information reports (FIRs).
With this operation, the total number of drug traffickers arrested has surged to 4,114 within just 26 days.
Authorities have also seized 1.1 kg of heroin, 301 grams of opium, and Rs 13,570 in drug-related cash from the arrested suspects.
The operation was carried out under the direction of Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, simultaneously across all 28 police districts of the state.
Importantly, CM Mann has urged Police Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, and Senior Superintendents of Police to work towards making Punjab a drug-free state.
The government has also set up a five-member Cabinet Sub-Committee, led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, to oversee the anti-drug initiatives.
Disclosing further details, Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla mentioned that over 200 police teams, consisting of more than 1,300 police personnel, under the supervision of 101 gazetted officers, conducted raids statewide and scrutinized 531 suspicious individuals during the all-day operation.
He emphasized that the Punjab Police has formulated a robust strategy and such operations will persist until the drug menace is completely eliminated.
The Special DGP clarified that the state government has implemented a three-pronged approach—Enforcement, De-addiction, and Prevention—to eradicate drugs. As part of the 'De-addiction' initiative, they have persuaded four individuals to seek rehabilitation, while organizing 114 awareness events statewide as part of the prevention effort.
Previously, last week, in support of the Punjab government’s anti-drugs campaign "Yudh Nashian Virudh", over 3,000 panchayats throughout the state passed resolutions endorsing the Punjab Police's unwavering fight against drugs, signifying a crucial milestone in the battle against the drug issue.
This campaign, led by Chief Minister Mann, has developed into a community movement, with villages and towns across the state actively engaging in the anti-drug initiative.
