Chandigarh, Feb 19 (NationPress) In a targeted operation based on intelligence, Punjab Police arrested Harmandeep Singh from Mahal village in Amritsar district and seized 10 kg of heroin, as reported by Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav on Wednesday.
The detained individual was reportedly in frequent contact with a Pakistan-based smuggler known as Chacha Bawa, who allegedly dispatched heroin using drones in the Attari sector for further distribution.
A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed under the NDPS Act, and investigations are ongoing to uncover other associates involved in this operation.
Previously, in one of the most significant heroin confiscations this year, Amritsar Rural Police dismantled a cross-border smuggling ring last week, arresting a drug trafficker and recovering 30 kg of heroin from his possession.
The apprehended suspect was identified as Gursimranjit Singh, also known as Simran, a resident of Baserke Gillan in Gharindha, Amritsar.
DGP Yadav reported that Gursimranjit Singh was heavily involved in large-scale heroin trafficking, having recently received a significant shipment of heroin smuggled from across the border.
Investigations revealed that smugglers from Pakistan utilized drones to transport this drug shipment.
The DGP indicated that further inquiries are underway to identify additional individuals connected to the smuggling network.
Detailing the operation, Senior Superintendent of Police (Amritsar Rural), Charanjit Singh, mentioned that based on intelligence about Gursimranjit Singh's involvement in narcotic smuggling, police teams from Amritsar Rural Police led by SHO Gharinda conducted a routine check on a Ford Fiesta.
During a comprehensive search, four packets of heroin, weighing 7.5 kg each, were discovered hidden in a black bag within the vehicle.
The SSP stated that the suspect is under interrogation to extract further information regarding the sources and distribution network involved in this smuggling operation.
