Punjab Speaker Criticizes Central Government for Ignoring Farmers' Demands

Chandigarh, Dec 9 (NationPress) The Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, Kultar Singh Sandhwan, expressed his concerns on Monday, accusing the Union government of neglecting the legitimate demands of farmers, forcing them to struggle on the roads without resolution to their issues.
He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to establish dialogue with the farmers, emphasizing that the Centre must take prompt and effective measures to address the farmers' challenges instead of procrastinating.
Sandhwan lamented the plight of Punjab's farmers, stating it is a difficult situation for them to endure being abandoned on the roads while the Union government remains apathetic.
He drew a comparison, indicating that farmers in Europe and other countries can directly present their concerns to their respective parliaments, while Indian farmers are met with indifference when they voice valid grievances.
The Speaker reminded the Centre that farmers are essential, as they not only provide food for millions but also act as the foundation of India’s agriculture, trade, and economy by growing a diverse range of crops.
He called on the Union government to show genuine concern for the farmers' demands and respond with integrity, seriousness, and compassion.
“It’s time farmers receive the recognition they deserve. The Union government must act promptly to resolve these urgent issues,” he stated.
In related news, the Supreme Court declined to consider a new request aimed at swiftly clearing blockages on national and state highways in Punjab, which alleged farmers and farmer unions have indefinitely obstructed.
The bench, led by Justice Surya Kant, questioned, “Why keep submitting petitions? We are already aware of the situation and have initiated responses. No further petitions will be entertained,” responding to the litigant.
“In ongoing PIL cases, we do not refuse any counsel. Assist us on the scheduled date, and we will determine if orders can be issued regarding the reopening of highways,” the apex court remarked.
Justice Kant's bench, which included Justice Manmohan, dismissed the latest petition from activist Gaurav Luthra while allowing the petitioner's lawyer to contribute to the ongoing case concerning public interest.
The PIL requested that all national highways and railway tracks remain unobstructed by the protesting farmers to facilitate smooth transportation for the public.
