Punjab CM Accuses Centre of Neglecting Farmers' Authentic Demands

Chandigarh, Dec 24 (NationPress) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Tuesday criticized the BJP-led Union government for its negligent treatment of farmers by not allowing them to present their legitimate demands.

In a statement, the Chief Minister expressed that the ‘self-proclaimed’ global leader Narendra Modi “is more concerned about intervening in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine but is indifferent towards the country's food producers”.

He stated that the Union government is blatantly disregarding the rightful demands of the nation's farmers, which is extremely regrettable.

Mann remarked, “It is unfortunate that the Prime Minister prioritizes his image as a ‘global leader’ by meddling in international matters instead of addressing the challenges faced by the citizens of India”.

The Chief Minister reminded PM Modi that during times of severe food production crises, the diligent and resilient farmers of the state had made significant contributions to make the country self-sufficient in grains.

He emphasized that the farmers of Punjab have even overexploited essential natural resources, such as fertile soil and water, to support the national food supply.

Despite the farmers' substantial contributions, Mann noted that the Union government has taken a hostile stance towards them, highlighting the peculiar nature of the government’s unwillingness to engage with farmers located just 200 km from the national capital.

The Chief Minister urged the Centre to abandon its arrogant attitude and initiate a dialogue with the protesting farmers. He asserted that the Centre should not wait for a special occasion to engage with them; instead, it should warmly approach the farmers and resolve their grievances.

Mann stressed the urgency of addressing farmers' issues for the greater public good.

Farmers have been protesting at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders between Punjab and Haryana since February 13, advocating for their long-standing demands, including a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP) for crops, loan waivers, and reforms to enhance conditions in the agricultural sector.
