Chandigarh, Sep 17 (NationPress) Punjab aims to procure 172 lakh metric tonnes of paddy at a price of Rs 2,389 per quintal, as announced by the Food and Civil Supplies Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak on Wednesday. The procurement process kicked off at Bhogpur Dana Mandi in Jalandhar district.
While reviewing the procurement logistics, the minister expressed the government's commitment to facilitate a seamless and efficient process for all involved.
In light of the recent floods, he assured that the state has put measures in place to prevent any issues for farmers wishing to sell their crops, stated Kataruchak.
The minimum support price (MSP) for paddy has been set at Rs 2,389 per quintal, with the government securing Cash Credit Limits (CCL) of Rs 15,000 crore for September and Rs 27,000 crore for October.
To ensure no inconvenience for farmers, sufficient supplies of bardana (gunny bags) have been organized. Although the target for paddy procurement is 172 lakh metric tonnes, preparations are in place to acquire nearly 190 lakh metric tonnes.
The minister guaranteed that the lifting and payment process would be synchronized, with immediate transfers to farmers’ accounts.
He instructed officials from the Food and Civil Supplies Department, the Punjab Mandi Board, and local administration to closely oversee market operations to maintain transparency and efficiency.
The Punjab Mandi Board has set up 1,822 purchase centres to facilitate smooth procurement, along with ensuring sufficient provisions for electricity, clean drinking water, and other essential services at these centres.
During his visit, he engaged with farmers Gurkirat Singh, Jaspal Singh, and Sukhraj Singh, who expressed their satisfaction with the efficient procurement process in Bhogpur Dana Mandi.
The minister assured them that their payments would be processed swiftly. He also urged farmers to deliver only fully dried paddy to the mandis, as excess moisture could affect procurement.
