Chennai, Jan 11 (NationPress) Notable Congress figure Rahul Gandhi will be visiting Gudalur in the Nilgiris district on January 13 to participate in the golden jubilee celebrations of St Thomas English High School.
According to party insiders, this visit will be strictly ceremonial, without any political engagements or public meetings during his short stay in this hill town.
Congress officials have indicated that Rahul Gandhi will arrive via helicopter from Mysuru around 3:30 p.m. After attending the school event, he is expected to leave by 4:30 p.m. There are no further commitments planned apart from an official welcome by local Congress leaders at the helipad.
“To the best of our knowledge, the leader has no political events or meetings scheduled for this visit,” stated a senior Congress official.
This will be Rahul Gandhi’s second visit to Gudalur in recent years. He last visited the area in September 2022 during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, where he engaged with supporters and praised the natural beauty of the Western Ghats.
During that visit, he stayed overnight at a private school before continuing his journey towards Karnataka as part of the national movement.
The golden jubilee celebrations at St Thomas English High School will also likely see the attendance of Rev Dr Mathews Mar Makarios Episcopa, the Metropolitan of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church, adding significance to the event.
This visit occurs amidst political tensions within the DMK-Congress alliance in Tamil Nadu. Recently, some Congress officials and representatives have publicly requested a larger share of power, igniting discussions within the ruling coalition.
The Congress party has ramped up its criticism against the BJP regarding the recent censorship controversy involving Vijay’s latest film, 'Jana Nayagan', an issue that has provoked strong political reactions in the state.
Additionally, sources indicate that the Congress leadership is preparing for a crucial meeting in New Delhi to assess the party’s electoral readiness in Tamil Nadu.
On January 18, Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi are expected to meet with the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president, former TNCC presidents, and state representatives. This meeting was originally scheduled for January 14 but has been postponed. A senior party leader mentioned that these meetings are part of the Congress’ routine to consult with leaders from election-bound states to evaluate the political landscape and refine organizational and electoral strategies ahead of upcoming elections.
