Rahul Narwekar Secures Unanimous Reelection as Speaker of Maharashtra Assembly

Mumbai, Dec 9 (NationPress) BJP legislator Rahul Narwekar was unanimously re-elected as the Speaker of the 15th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Monday, marking his second consecutive term after previously serving in the 14th Assembly. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis initiated the resolution to elect Narwekar as Speaker, which was supported by NCP legislator Anil Patil.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also proposed Narwekar’s election, with support from BJP legislator Ashish Shelar.

Furthermore, a similar resolution was presented by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, seconded by BJP legislator Chandrakant Patil.

Following the resolutions, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis congratulated Narwekar on his re-election as Speaker for a second time.

Fadnavis expressed gratitude to the Opposition for their backing during Narwekar’s election.

Narwekar, who was elected from the Colaba constituency as a BJP candidate, first won the seat in the 2019 Assembly election.

In July 2022, he assumed the Speaker position after Eknath Shinde became Chief Minister following the dissolution of the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government.

“Speaker Sir, you never indicated you would return. Nonetheless, I am personally pleased that you have. A distinguished lawyer taking on the role of Speaker is commendable. I trust you will uphold the integrity of this position,” he remarked.

He emphasized that Narwekar initially became Speaker during his first term and is now securing a second term.

“Throughout your two-and-a-half years, you were often the focal point of discussions, especially during this transitional phase in Maharashtra politics,” he added.

The Chief Minister noted, “You faced significant challenges (in matters relating to divisions within Shiv Sena and NCP) during your previous term, but a representative from Konkan has successfully navigated them.”

He recalled that four previous Speakers have held the position for a second time, and now Narwekar joins their ranks.

“During your earlier term, you established a distinct reputation due to your legal acumen and adeptness in managing the House,” remarked the Chief Minister.

He pointed out that the Speaker must also consider the Opposition's views while conducting House proceedings.

“I've already stated that the Opposition's worth will not be measured by its size,” he asserted.

Fadnavis praised the decisions made by Narwekar during his prior term (regarding the splits in Shiv Sena and NCP), highlighting their future significance.

He emphasized that as Speaker, Narwekar must ensure fairness for all members, particularly those serving for the first time.
