Chennai, Jan 15 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), based in Chennai, has predicted light to moderate rainfall in six districts of Tamil Nadu today. The affected districts are Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, and Ramanathapuram.
The RMC has linked this weather pattern to a low-pressure system situated over the southeast Arabian Sea and nearby areas of the Bay of Bengal along the equatorial region. An above-average rainfall trend is anticipated across the state in the upcoming days.
Forecast models indicate that Tamil Nadu may experience above-normal rainfall until January 16, followed by a return to normal rainfall activity from January 17 to January 23.
In Chennai, there is a forecast for light to moderate rain, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, for today and tomorrow.
The highest temperature in the city is projected to reach 27 degrees Celsius, with a minimum temperature ranging between 23 degrees and 24 degrees under a cloudy atmosphere.
Mild precipitation is also expected in Chennai and nearby districts until January 16 due to an upper air circulation. Heavy rainfall is anticipated in the Manjolai region, while moderate rain is expected along the coastal areas stretching from Chennai to the delta regions and Thoothukudi. Additional rainfall is likely from January 19 to 21 due to another low-pressure system.
This season, Tamil Nadu has recorded a 14 percent increase in rainfall during the northeast monsoon period, totaling 447 mm as opposed to the seasonal average of 393 mm. The city of Chennai received 845 mm of rainfall, which is 16 percent above average, while Coimbatore showed a significant 47 percent increase.
The recent Cyclone Fengal, which impacted Tamil Nadu from November 29 to December 1, resulted in extensive damage. It led to 12 fatalities and flooded 211,139 hectares of agricultural land. The cyclone caused destruction to 1,649 km of electric lines, 23,664 electric poles, 997 transformers, 9,576 km of roads, 1,847 culverts, and 417 tanks. The districts of Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Kallakurichi saw over 50 cm of rainfall in just one day, equivalent to an entire season’s worth. The cyclone adversely affected 69 lakh families and 1.5 crore individuals across the state.
