Rajasthan's Initiative to Curb Children's Screen Time Unveiled
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, April 15 (NationPress) The 8th National Nutrition Fortnight (Poshan Pakhwada), which commenced on April 9, is evolving into a significant movement aimed at promoting a healthier Rajasthan, as stated by state government officials on Wednesday.
This two-week initiative prioritizes optimal brain development in children throughout their first six years and encourages active participation from the community.
A major focus is on limiting children's screen time, fostering play-based learning during early childhood, and enhancing both maternal and child nutrition.
The campaign will run until April 23, with over two million activities already conducted statewide.
This effort is raising awareness among families and communities about essential nutrition practices that contribute to healthy living and robust brain development.
At the community level, it serves as an effective platform for delivering nutrition services through the Anganwadi network and community organizations.
By employing a scientific and community-oriented approach, the program is establishing a solid foundation for a nutrition-secure and healthy childhood.
It is widely acknowledged that more than 85 percent of brain development occurs by the age of six, with the most rapid growth taking place in the first 1,000 days of life.
In this light, a specialized activity known as “Early Stimulation for Brain Development” is being executed under the initiative. To date, over 489,000 such activities have been implemented across Rajasthan.
Key actions taken include more than 682,000 activities related to maternal and child nutrition, over 383,000 activities promoting play-based education for early years, over 242,000 activities aimed at reducing screen time, over 176,000 activities to enhance Anganwadi Centres, and 27,671 activities in other categories.
It's significant to note that the Poshan Abhiyan (National Nutrition Mission) was inaugurated on March 8, 2018, in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan by Prime Minister Modi.
This mission aims to improve the nutritional status of adolescent girls, pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children aged 0–6 years.
The program seeks to combat malnutrition and anemia through technology-driven monitoring, inter-departmental collaboration, and community involvement.
It plays a vital role in addressing nutritional challenges in a comprehensive and enduring manner.
Rajasthan has demonstrated impressive performance under this mission. During the Rashtriya Poshan Maah held last September, the state achieved second place, later securing first position during the 7th Poshan Pakhwada, as reported by officials.
Major focus areas of the 8th Poshan Pakhwada concerning maternal and child nutrition include promoting appropriate nutrition during pregnancy, exclusive breastfeeding, and timely complementary feeding; fostering interaction and responsive caregiving for brain development; encouraging play-based learning (3–6 years) to support holistic growth and school readiness; reducing screen time to foster healthy habits among children through parental and community engagement; and enhancing the infrastructure and service delivery of Anganwadi Centres through public participation and corporate social responsibility initiatives.
