New Delhi, Feb 25 (NationPress) In a show of appreciation for the Indian Coast Guard's (ICG) relentless battle against piracy, terrorism, and infiltration, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presented 32 medals to its personnel for their distinguished gallantry, service, and merit on Tuesday.
During the 18th ICG Investiture Ceremony at Bharat Mandapam, the Defence Minister praised the ICG for its vital role in maintaining the nation's strategic security while proactively addressing issues like smuggling, illegal fishing, and maritime safety, as well as humanitarian missions.
A total of 32 awards were distributed, including six President’s Tatrakshak Medals (Distinguished Service), 11 Tatrakshak Medals (Gallantry), and 15 Tatrakshak Medals (Meritorious Service) for the years 2022, 2023, and 2024, recognizing the personnel's exceptional contributions, as stated in an official release.
While congratulating the awardees, Singh emphasized that the medals represent not just awards, but a testament to bravery, determination, and an unwavering commitment to upholding the dignity of the Tricolour.
He acknowledged the personnel's significant achievements in ensuring coastal security, operational efficiency, drug seizures, rescue missions, and participation in international drills.
Over the past year, ICG has successfully intercepted 14 boats and apprehended 115 pirates, alongside a major drug bust valued at roughly Rs 37,000 crore. Furthermore, ICG has rescued 169 individuals and provided critical medical assistance to 29 severely injured persons.
Singh asserted that the aspiration for a secure and prosperous India can only be fulfilled with a strong security framework and capable forces.
He reiterated the government’s commitment, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to enhance ICG's operational capabilities. The ICG has been allocated Rs 9,676.70 crore for the Financial Year 2025-26, marking a significant increase of 26.50 percent over the previous budget.
This funding is a pivotal step towards modernizing the ICG.
“Additionally, the acquisition of 14 Fast Patrol Vessels, six Air Cushion Vehicles, 22 Interceptor Boats, six Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels, and 18 Next Generation Fast Patrol Vessels has been sanctioned to fortify the ICG,” he noted.
He also praised the ICG's commitment to technological advancements, highlighting the foundation laying of the Digital Coast Guard initiative. These initiatives are designed to continuously enhance the ICG's capabilities to effectively counter both conventional and unconventional threats.
