Chennai, Aug 14 (NationPress) The president of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and former Union Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has vehemently criticized the Tamil Nadu government, accusing it of cowardice for initiating a late-night police operation against sanitation workers who have been protesting in Chennai for nearly two weeks.

In a statement released on Thursday, Ramadoss condemned the forced eviction and detention of hundreds of conservancy workers who had been engaged in a sit-in demonstration near the Greater Chennai Corporation's headquarters on Aravazhiyal Road for twelve consecutive days.

The protesting workers, hailing from the Royapuram and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar zones, are opposing the privatization of conservancy services and are demanding job security.

Ramadoss pointed out that the protest was peaceful and their demands were just.

"The workers merely sought for the Corporation to take charge of waste management directly and grant them permanent employment. If the government had the determination, it could have addressed these demands from the outset. Instead, it opted for suppression," he stated.

The PMK leader asserted that there were no genuine barriers to swiftly resolving the issue. Even if the existing contractor needed extra funding to enhance wages and benefits, the state could have facilitated that.

"However, instead of showing empathy and effective governance, the government exhibited intolerance and fear," he commented.

Criticizing Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Ramadoss contended that the CM had sufficient opportunity to intervene but failed to do so.

"It seems that the Chief Minister has time only to watch films, not to engage with the impoverished workers who maintain our streets," the PMK president alleged.

Ramadoss remarked that last night's actions had "revealed the government's priorities and character."

"It is not valor to dispatch police at midnight to remove humble workers from the streets; that is cowardice. True bravery would involve facing them directly, listening to their concerns, and resolving the issue honorably," he asserted.

He cautioned that the people of Tamil Nadu would not forgive or forget the DMK government's treatment of sanitation workers and pledged that his party would remain steadfast in supporting the laborers in their quest for justice.

Point of View

It is crucial to highlight that while protests are a fundamental aspect of democratic expression, the response of government authorities must prioritize dialogue and resolution over suppression. The situation underscores the need for a balanced approach that respects the rights of workers while ensuring public order.
