Mumbai, Jan 5 (NationPress) RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra on Monday emphasized the importance of maintaining robust underwriting standards and vigilant oversight of asset quality among NBFCs. During a meeting with the Managing Directors and Chief Executive Officers of selected non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), which included government NBFCs, housing finance companies (HFCs), and microfinance institutions, the RBI Governor underscored the significance of being customer-centric, adhering to ethical practices, and promoting responsible lending.

He pointed out the necessity for swift resolution of customer grievances to uphold trust in the NBFC sector and to assist in its structured and sustainable growth.

The entities represented in the meeting collectively manage around 53 percent of the assets within the NBFC sector. Industry representatives included officials from Self-Regulatory Organizations, Sa-Dhan, the Micro Finance Institutions Network, and the Finance Industry Development Council, as stated in a release from the RBI following the meeting.

In his introductory comments, the Governor acknowledged the vital role of NBFCs and HFCs in enhancing credit availability. Throughout the discussions, participants provided input on various policy-related issues and operational challenges facing the NBFC sector.

Also present were Deputy Governors T. Rabi Sankar, Swaminathan J., Dr. Poonam Gupta, and S. C. Murmu, along with the MD & CEO of the National Housing Bank and other senior officials from the Reserve Bank.

In a related matter, the inaugural meeting of the Payments Regulatory Board (PRB) was convened on the same day under the leadership of the RBI Governor. This board was established following an amendment to the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, which took effect on May 9, 2025.

The board assessed the roles of the Department of Payment and Settlement Systems and examined current priorities covering both domestic and international payment systems. A preliminary draft of the Payments Vision 2028 was introduced, and members provided strategic direction to ensure the ongoing advancement of India's payment ecosystem. Additionally, a presentation of the significant findings from the recent Survey on Digital Payments, conducted by the RBI, was shared, according to the RBI's statement.
