Is Reliance Group Investing Rs 10 Lakh Crore in AI to Create High-Skill Jobs? Mukesh Ambani Reveals Plans
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 19 (NationPress) Billionaire Mukesh Ambani revealed on Thursday that Jio and Reliance Industries will collectively invest up to Rs 10 lakh crore in artificial intelligence over the next seven years.
"This is not a speculative investment. It is not merely about valuation. This capital is patient, disciplined, and focused on nation-building — aimed at generating enduring economic value and strategic resilience for decades," the Chairman of Reliance Industries noted while speaking at the AI India Impact Summit.
He emphasized that the main obstacle in AI today is not a lack of talent or creativity, but rather the limited and costly computing resources. To address this, Jio Intelligence will establish India's sovereign compute infrastructure through three ambitious initiatives.
The first initiative involves constructing Gigawatt-Scale Data Centres. The company has commenced building multi-gigawatt, AI-ready data centers in Jamnagar, with plans for over 120 MW to be operational in the latter half of 2026, and a clear trajectory towards gigawatt-scale computing for training and large-scale inference, Ambani stated.
Secondly, the company possesses an in-house advantage in green energy, boasting a surplus of up to 10 GW of green power, primarily sourced from solar energy in Kutch and Andhra Pradesh.
The third initiative focuses on establishing a nationwide edge computing framework. This edge-compute layer will be intricately linked with Jio’s network, ensuring that intelligence is responsive, low-latency, and affordable — positioned close to where Indians live, learn, and work.
Ambani stated, "From kirana stores to clinics, from classrooms to farms — intelligence will reside at the edge. Our mission is clear: to make intelligence as widespread as connectivity. When computing becomes infrastructure, innovation will be inevitable."
He expressed that Jio Intelligence aims to harness AI to enhance India’s deep-tech and advanced manufacturing prowess, targeting not only large enterprises but also sectors like agriculture, small businesses, and the informal economy.
Furthermore, he noted that Jio Intelligence will be more than just a search tool; it will serve as a platform to amplify productivity and efficiency.
The second objective is to develop "world-class multilingual AI capabilities across all Indian languages. When farmers and artisans communicate with AI in their native tongues, and students learn in their mother language — this is more than convenience; it represents true inclusion," he remarked.
He also emphasized that Jio will prioritize responsibility, security, data residency, and trust as foundational guarantees.
Moreover, Mukesh Ambani asserted that the Reliance Group will demonstrate how AI can create new high-skill job opportunities rather than eliminate them.
Ambani remarked, "The narrative around AI has shifted from 'Who possesses the best model?' to 'Who can forge the most robust ecosystem for rapid and expansive usage?"
He stated that the Reliance Group will cultivate a strong partnership ecosystem with Indian enterprises, startups, IITs, IISc, and research institutions. The group will collaborate closely with leading industrial organizations in India to integrate AI across manufacturing, logistics, energy, finance, retail, agriculture, and healthcare sectors.
"We aim to empower startups with accessible computing resources and co-development platforms. Our aspiration is to achieve global breakthroughs in compute architecture, foundational models, and energy efficiency — all designed in India, grounded in our values, propelled by our talent, and scaled for the benefit of humanity," Ambani noted.
He further highlighted that the Reliance Group will partner with top-tier technology firms globally — not merely as consumers of intelligence, but as co-architects of a transformative AI era.
