New Delhi, May 2 (NationPress) On Friday morning, a series of intense thunderstorms and rainfall provided significant relief to residents in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), including Noida, from the ongoing heatwave.
At 5:19 a.m., the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on X that severe thunder and lightning, along with squally winds of 70-80 km/h, are expected to affect Delhi in the upcoming hours.
The IMD had forecast heavy rains, thunderstorms, and strong winds for the next three days, thereby issuing a yellow alert for the national capital.
The weekly forecast from the IMD indicates that thunderstorms with rain are anticipated on Friday and Saturday, which could lead to a slight reduction in temperatures.
Previously, the IMD indicated that moderate to heavy rainfall, paired with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds ranging from 40–90 km/h, are likely to persist over the next two hours in various regions, including Delhi and the NCR.
Other affected areas include parts of Haryana (Yamunanagar, Karnal, Safidon, Panipat, Sohana, Palwal, Nuh, Aurangabad, Hodal), Uttar Pradesh (Gangoh, Shamli, Kandhla, Nandgaon, Barsana, Raya, Hathras, Mathura, Sadabad, Agra, Jajau), and Rajasthan (Bhiwari, Deeg, Bharatpur).
A new and active Western disturbance is expected to impact northwest India starting from May 2. As a result, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand will see light to moderate rainfall along with strong winds and lightning.
The IMD also noted that a dust storm, coupled with strong winds, is likely in isolated areas over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, and Rajasthan.
In addition, the IMD has forecasted rainfall and snowfall in certain regions of Himachal Pradesh.
On Thursday, the weather department issued a yellow alert for the lower and mid-hill districts of the state, cautioning residents about potential thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.
Himachal Pradesh is expected to see a break from the summer heat, with light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and possible snowfall at higher elevations anticipated over the next week.
Starting from May 1, rainfall activity is projected to commence across several districts in Himachal Pradesh. This intermittent rain is likely to continue for the next five to seven days, resulting in a temperature drop of 3 to 4 degrees Celsius, according to the IMD.
From April 30 to May 2, warnings for thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall will remain active across North, East, Northeast, and Peninsular India. Hailstorms are expected in North Interior Karnataka and parts of Odisha.
Heatwave conditions are anticipated to persist in West Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir, with hot and humid weather advisories in place for Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.
Thunderstorm and lightning activity is expected to continue across Northern India, including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh during May 3 and 4. Peninsular India will also remain under alerts, especially affecting Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala.
