Residents Advised of Level 2 Flood Warning Near Puzhal Lake

Chennai, Dec 14 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu government has issued a Level 2 flood alert for individuals living along the banks of Puzhal Lake after increasing the water discharge rate to 1,000 cubic feet per second from the reservoir.

State officials reported that the discharge rate was escalated from 500 to 1,000 cubic feet per second.

Meanwhile, the water levels in the Chembarambakkam and Poondi reservoirs have diminished due to decreased inflow as of Saturday.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has previously issued an orange alert for the districts of Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, and Tirunelveli for Saturday.

Furthermore, a yellow alert has been declared for 11 additional districts statewide.

In Chennai and nearby areas, light rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning are anticipated on Saturday.

Partly cloudy skies are expected, with maximum and minimum temperatures projected to be between 30-31 degree C and 24-25 degree C, respectively.

Heavy rainfall is predicted to affect the coastal and delta regions of Tamil Nadu starting December 16.

The RMC has predicted the emergence of another low-pressure zone within two days, which could lead to significant rainfall. S. Balachandran, Additional Director-General of Meteorology in Chennai, noted that the active Northeast Monsoon is responsible for the ongoing formation of weather systems, underscoring the necessity for enhanced disaster management readiness.

Rainfall persisted across multiple regions of Tamil Nadu, with Virudhunagar recording 12 cm and Thoothukudi receiving 10 cm by 5:30 a.m.

Following a brief respite, the RMC has forecasted that widespread rainfall will recommence from Monday.

An upper-air cyclonic circulation is anticipated to develop over the South Andaman Sea on Saturday, potentially resulting in a new low-pressure area over the southern Bay of Bengal.

This system is expected to move west-northwest towards the Tamil Nadu coastline by Monday.

As reported by the Tamil Nadu government, five fatalities related to rain have occurred on Friday and Saturday morning. Three individuals died due to wall collapses in the Ariyalur and Ramanathapuram districts, while two others were electrocuted in Sivaganga and Ranipet districts.

Over 2,000 people have been relocated to 50 relief camps in affected districts, with more than 100 cattle lost across 10 districts, including Mayiladuthurai and Ramanathapuram.

The rains have caused extensive property damage, affecting over 400 houses across 20 districts, including Ariyalur and Chengalpattu.

The flow of the Thamiraparani River has surged to 50,000 cusecs due to heavy rainfall in nearby areas.

Residents near riverbanks and in low-lying zones have been evacuated to relief camps. Warning messages have been dispatched to over 11.75 lakh mobile phones to ensure public safety.
