Severe Rainfall Expected in Four Delta Districts of Tamil Nadu

Chennai, Dec 17 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecasted significant rainfall in four Delta districts of Tamil Nadu -- Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur -- on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Karaikal is also anticipated to experience very heavy rainfall during this timeframe.

The expected rains are attributed to a new low-pressure area forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal. The weather department indicates that this low-pressure system is developing under the influence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation, which was initially located over the South Andaman Sea and nearby regions before shifting towards the Bay of Bengal.

This system is predicted to intensify and move west-northwest towards the Tamil Nadu coastline throughout the day.

Heavy rainfall is also probable at isolated locations in Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchy, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai districts, and Puducherry.

On Wednesday, heavy to very heavy rain is anticipated in isolated areas over Cuddalore, Villupuram districts, and Puducherry.

Additional heavy rainfall is also forecast for isolated regions in Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur districts, along with Karaikal.

Any stagnation or slow movement of the weather system could convert this rainfall event into a widespread heavy rainfall situation over the northern Tamil Nadu coast, as noted by MeT officials.

Furthermore, the potential for interactions between westerly and easterly winds near south-coastal Andhra Pradesh or north-coastal Tamil Nadu is on the rise. This could lead to extreme rainfall between Marakkanam and Sriharikota. The area from Pondicherry to Nellore might also experience heavy to very heavy rain during this timeframe.

Tamil Nadu has recorded a 14 percent increase in rainfall during the ongoing northeast monsoon season, with a total of 447 mm received compared to the average of 393 mm.

Chennai recorded 845 mm of rainfall, which is 16 percent above average, while Coimbatore experienced a notable 47 percent rise in rainfall.

Fishermen are advised to refrain from venturing into the sea, and those currently at sea have been urged to return to shore without delay.

This warning comes in the wake of the devastation caused by Cyclone Fengal, which affected Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from November 29 to December 1.

The cyclone brought intense rainfall, followed by heavy to very heavy precipitation due to a low-pressure system over the south Bay of Bengal.

Cyclone Fengal resulted in 12 fatalities and inundated 211,139 hectares of agricultural and horticultural land, leading to significant losses for farmers. Infrastructure damage included 1,649 km of electric conductors, 23,664 electric poles, 997 transformers, 9,576 km of roads, 1,847 culverts, and 417 tanks.

Numerous houses and huts sustained damage. The districts of Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Kallakurichi recorded over 50 cm of rainfall in a single day, which is equivalent to the average for an entire season. This resulted in severe flooding and extensive crop damage. The Tamil Nadu government reported that 6.9 million families and 15 million individuals were impacted by this disaster.
