Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Thursday, 27 August conducted a surprise inspection of the ongoing development works at Mir Alam Tank in Hyderabad, as the state government pushes to transform the historic reservoir into a world-class tourist destination. The visit underscored the government's urgency around the ₹430 crore project, which is targeted for completion in late 2027.

What the Chief Minister Reviewed

Revanth Reddy toured the site in an open-top jeep and used a heavy crane to ascend and personally inspect the suspension bridge under construction across the tank. He reviewed development plans displayed through a photo exhibition and offered multiple suggestions to improve the overall design and visitor experience.

Senior officials from the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, and municipal authorities accompanied him during the inspection.

Key Directives to Officials

The Chief Minister directed officials to complete all works within the stipulated timeline and to adopt distinctive, world-class designs with tourist-friendly amenities. He specifically instructed them to prevent sewage from entering the tank and to widen the canal to ensure smooth floodwater flow into the Musi River.

Officials were also asked to explore facilities for water sports and other tourist activities, and to develop the islands within the tank attractively — in line with a vision Revanth Reddy had articulated as far back as March, when he proposed modelling the three island-like areas on Singapore's Gardens by the Bay, complete with a bird sanctuary and waterfalls.

The Suspension Bridge: A New Landmark

The cable-stayed bridge under construction over Mir Alam Tank is expected to become Hyderabad's second iconic bridge, after the one at Durgam Cheruvu in the IT hub of Madhapur. At 2.65 km in length and 22.2 metres wide, it will connect Shastripuram with Chintalmet Road, improving connectivity in the southern parts of the city.

Broader Vision: Tourism and Environment

Revanth Reddy emphasised that the development must create a distinctive tourism experience while simultaneously improving the environment and infrastructure around the tank. He highlighted Mir Alam Tank's proximity to Hyderabad's international airport as a strategic advantage for attracting both domestic and international visitors.

The project represents one of the more ambitious urban waterfront redevelopment initiatives in southern India, and its success will likely influence how the state approaches similar heritage water bodies across Telangana. With a 2027 deadline in sight, execution pace will be closely watched.
