Revanth Reddy pushes Centre to fast-track Hyderabad Metro Phase-II, ₹38,595 crore DPR submitted
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday, 6 May met Union Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal in New Delhi and urged the Centre to expedite approval for the Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase-II project, covering 122.9 km across seven corridors at an estimated cost of ₹38,595 crore. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) has already been submitted to the Union Government, according to the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).
What Phase-II Covers
The Telangana government has formulated a comprehensive plan for Metro Rail Phase-II comprising seven corridors spanning a total distance of 122.9 km. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy appealed for the project to be executed as a joint venture between the Union government and the Telangana government, citing rapidly growing demand for metro rail services in Hyderabad.
During the meeting, Revanth Reddy also discussed the pending approval of Metro Rail Phase-III, underscoring the urgent need for a broader expansion of the metro network to ensure safe public transportation and commuter convenience in the rapidly developing city.
State's Takeover of Phase-I and Its Significance
According to the CMO, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy informed Union Minister Manohar Lal that the Telangana government had taken full control of Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase-I from L&TMRHL with the specific objective of ensuring seamless execution of the Phase-II and Phase-III expansion projects. The Chief Minister emphasised that this takeover would facilitate smoother implementation of the upcoming phases.
This comes amid growing pressure on urban infrastructure in Hyderabad, one of India's fastest-growing metropolitan cities, where public transport demand has consistently outpaced supply in recent years.
Phase-III: Airport–Bharat Future City Corridor
To address future public transportation requirements, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy also requested the Centre to take up the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport–Bharat Future City corridor under Metro Rail Phase-III. He apprised Union Minister Manohar Lal that the DPR for Metro Phase-III has already been submitted to the Union Government.
Key Officials at the Meeting
The meeting was attended by senior officials including Union Secretary for Housing and Urban Affairs K. Srinivas, Special Secretary to the Chief Minister B. Ajith Reddy, HMRCL Managing Director Sarfaraz Ahmed, State Government Advisor (Urban Transport) N.V.S. Reddy, Officer on Special Duty at Telangana Bhavan (Delhi) Sanjay Kumar, and Secretary for Coordination of Central Government Schemes Advait Kumar Singh, among others.
With DPRs for both Phase-II and Phase-III already in the Centre's hands, the pace of Union Government approval will now determine whether Hyderabad's metro ambitions stay on track.
