Telangana CM Revanth Reddy seeks Raghuram Rajan panel on AI in education
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Tuesday, 5 May requested former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan to constitute a high-level committee on the integration of Artificial Intelligence across primary, higher secondary, technical, and medical education syllabi in the state. The Chief Minister also sought Rajan's advice and suggestions on the appropriate use of AI in these educational streams.
Meeting at Jubilee Hills
The discussion took place during a high-level meeting on Telangana's future planning, chaired by the Chief Minister at his Jubilee Hills residence in Hyderabad. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Minister for Industry and Information Technology D. Sridhar Babu, and senior state officials were present. Raghuram Rajan joined the meeting via video conference.
What Raghuram Rajan Said
Rajan stated that using AI in the right manner will benefit everyone. He noted that greater investments can be attracted into the state if an industrial policy similar to that of Tamil Nadu is put in place. According to the Chief Minister's Office, Rajan also flagged that large-scale electricity and water usage will be required for data centres — a consideration for Telangana's infrastructure planning. He confirmed he would visit Hyderabad in three to four months.
Rajan pointed to employment opportunities across multiple sectors if skills are adequately enhanced, and made several suggestions including addressing the problem of nutritional deficiencies as part of human resource development. He added that new industries and investments will follow governments that maintain strong ease-of-doing-business policies, and that greater encouragement to startups will lead to higher utilisation of emerging technologies.
State's Development Roadmap
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy explained that steps are already under way to develop a Skills University and Advanced Training Centres (ATCs) aimed at creating middle-level jobs, with AI integrated into this effort. Deputy Chief Minister Vikramarka highlighted that all facilities required by industries — including land, infrastructure, an international airport, and the Outer Ring Road — are in place in the state. He noted that electricity production is being scaled in line with future demand projections.
Vikramarka also stated that Telangana has been divided into three development regions and is moving forward under the CURE, PURE, RARE policy framework, reflecting the government's structured approach to regional growth. This meeting signals Telangana's intent to position itself as a frontrunner in AI-driven education reform among Indian states, with the proposed high-level committee expected to provide a concrete roadmap in the months ahead.
