New Delhi/Agartala, Jan 15 (NationPress) A rights organization based in Delhi, the Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG), has vehemently condemned the assault on Adivasi students that left 11 injured, with two of them in critical condition, executed by members of the Islamic Chhatra Shibir in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Wednesday.
As reported by RRAG, the two critically injured students were taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for urgent treatment. Tejang Chakma, the Deputy Director of RRAG, stated that the attack on Adivasi students was premeditated and carried out by the Islamic Chhatra Shibir affiliated with Jamaat-I-Islami.
The Adivasi students, including those from mainland Bangladesh, rallied under the banner of “Songkhubda Adivasi Chhatra Janata” in front of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) in Dhaka to protest against the removal of the term Adivasi from the cover of the 9th and 10th-grade Bengali Grammar and Composition textbook.
Members of the Islamic Chhatra Shibir, operating under the banner of “Students for Sovereignty”, assaulted the Adivasi students using cricket bats, wooden sticks, and other hazardous items, according to a statement from RRAG. At least 11 students sustained injuries.
The injured students include Rupaya Shresta Tanchongya, Ishaba, Renyoung Mro, Dhanajetra, Juwel Mark, Shaili, and Tani Charing.
The individuals responsible for leading the assault were identified as Mohammed Abu Sadiq Qayem, President of the Islamic Chhatra Shibir at Dhaka University, SM Farhad, Secretary, and Mohammed Yakub Majumdar, Joint Convenor of Students for Sovereignty, as per the statement.
“The RRAG will raise this issue with the United Nations, the diplomatic community, and the interim government to ensure that the culprits are apprehended. The true nature of the Bangladesh government, led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, is being revealed, and Adivasi students are unable to protest safely in the capital, Dhaka,” Chakma emphasized in his statement.
