Guwahati, March 24 (NationPress) The Assam Assembly experienced significant turmoil on Monday when the ruling party accused Congress MLA Nurul Huda of supposedly assaulting Deputy Speaker Numal Momin outside the legislative chamber, which led to an immediate adjournment.

Earlier that day, Congress representatives donned black clothing in a demonstration against BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, who allegedly verbally assaulted opposition MLAs and attempted to physically confront them during a session the previous week.

Before proceedings began, Congress members organized a sit-in protest outside the Speaker’s office, demanding disciplinary measures against Kurmi.

During the Question Hour, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed to the assembly, “I received a WhatsApp message from Momin informing me that he was attacked by Nurul Huda and is currently hospitalized. I urge the Speaker to initiate a police investigation as the incident occurred outside the Assembly, which would allow law enforcement to delve into the case.”

Notably, Momin had been present in the session shortly before the alleged attack but left the House shortly thereafter.

Speaker Biswajit Daimary assured members that he had instructed officials to investigate the situation.

In response to the Chief Minister’s remarks, Opposition Leader Debabrata Saikia called for a House Committee to probe the alleged assault, asserting that it took place within the Assembly premises and thus should be subject to internal examination rather than police involvement.

The situation intensified as opposition members, including representatives from Congress, AIUDF, and CPI-M, entered the Well of the House, protesting against Kurmi’s conduct and challenging the ruling party’s assertions regarding the incident involving Momin.

Members from the treasury bench, led by Sarma, countered the protests, stating that the opposition had attacked Momin, who is a member of an indigenous tribal community.

“This sets a perilous precedent. An indigenous tribal has been assaulted within the Assembly complex, and this could escalate into a serious matter,” Sarma cautioned.

Amid the growing tension, Speaker Daimary announced that he had directed the Assembly Secretary to verify Momin’s status and briefly adjourned the House for ten minutes in an effort to restore order.
