Samvidhan Showdown in Lok Sabha: BJP Cites 1975 Emergency to Counter Congress Criticism

New Delhi, Dec 14 (NationPress) The second day of discussions commemorating 75 years since the Constitution was adopted saw intense debates in the Lok Sabha, with members of the Congress and BJP engaging in heated verbal confrontations on Saturday.
In response to Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi’s series of accusations, BJP MP Anurag Thakur retaliated by recalling the 'historical wrongs' committed during the tenure of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The BJP representative also mocked LoP Gandhi for showcasing a copy of the Constitution, asserting that he is unaware and uninformed regarding the intricate details of this esteemed document.
“Some individuals carry the Samvidhaan (Constitution) in their pockets but cannot even state the number of pages,” he remarked, delivering a sharp criticism aimed at the LoP.
Thakur contended that while the Congress claims to uphold the Constitution’s integrity, it was the same party under Indira Gandhi that strangled democracy by imposing the Emergency.
Earlier, LoP Gandhi spearheaded the Opposition's efforts in the Lok Sabha, aiming to challenge the government on various issues, including unemployment and the marginalization of backward communities concerning reservations.
Addressing these allegations, the BJP lawmaker referenced the ‘preface and foreword’ of the Constitution, highlighting that it was crafted by the nation's most talented individuals, whom the Congress is attempting to disparage.
He asserted that it was the authority of the Constitution that forced Indira Gandhi to terminate the Emergency.
“A Congress MP claims that the government is deceiving the youth and curtailing their opportunities. I want to state that it was the Congress government during which the brutal massacre of the Sikhs occurred,” Thakur said, as the Treasury Benches responded with vigorous desk thumping.
He further urged Congress members to cease their attempts to obscure their failures by hiding behind the Constitution and to stop misleading the public with falsehoods and fabrications.
The debate on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution's adoption is set to wrap up today, culminating with a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The first day of discussions featured fiery exchanges, with Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi leading the Congress offensive and the Defence Minister countering their claims.
The second day commenced with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju reflecting on the Congress's assertions of promoting the spirit of democracy.
